Here are my five...not including my Kindle (which is NOT cheating, I don't care what you say)!
Yes, this book is on my Kindle, but I'd still grab the actual hard-cover as well. I read this book at least once a year and still love it. Intrigue, mistaken identity, spies, murder mysteries, romance...they are all contained in the pages of this book.
Neil Gaiman is one of those writer's that everyone can tell you how awesome he is, but until you read one of his books you won't truly understand. Out of a library of amazing books, American Gods is far and away my favorite.
I'm cheating again but, since I have all nine books in a box set, I can grab the box and count it as one. The Little House series is probably the first series of books I ever read by myself. I have the vintage, yellow box set shown here, which was purchased from the Laura Ingalls Wilder home and museum in Mansfield, Missouri. Loved the books then and still love them today.
I'm sure this seems like an odd choice as there are so many books by Terry Pratchett that are so good. The reason I chose this one is because it combines two things that I love - 1) Discworld's fantastically screwed up but highly effective 'Night' watch and 2) a story that is about equality. It's funny, thought provoking and irreverent - just what a Terry Pratchett book should be.
Another classic literary tale makes my list because, well, because I really like classic literary books, okay?
This one tells the story of Edmond Dantes, a sailor of humble beginnings, who is engaged to marry the love of his life, Mercedes. On the eve of the wedding, Edmond is betrayed, arrested, and thrown in the terrifying Chateau D'If. The book chronicles Edmond's imprisonment, eventual escape, and the revenge he takes on the men who betrayed him.
Betrayal, romance, revenge, buried treasure...it's all in here. This is the kind of book that you will stay up all night to read because you just can't put it down.

So ends my list of five books that I'd save in the event of a fire. Or at least the list as it is today. Another day there could be five completely different books on the list, you never know!
If, for some unknown reason, you haven't read one (or all) of these books, take my advice and read them now. They are well worth the investment of time!
